What Is Stewardship?

As we strive to live as faithful and generous stewards, it is important that we understand all
of the facets of stewardship. Here are just a few key aspects of stewardship. Stewardship is:

Spending Time
with God
- Stewardship involves spending time with God. Recognizing that every day is a gift from God, we strive to spend some of each day with God, through prayer, worship, scripture reading, quiet, meditation and other spiritual activities.

Sharing Talent
- Stewardship involves sharing talent. Recognizing that God has given each individual unique skills and talents so that together we can do the work of Our Lord, we strive to share our own talents and to encourage and welcome others to also use their talents to carry out the mission and ministry of St. George’s.

Giving Treasure
- Stewardship involves giving treasure. Giving time and talent does not excuse us from giving treasure. We know that throughout the Gospels, Jesus challenged us to give as it has been given to us. Recognizing the tremendous financial blessings that abound in our country, we strive to give at least 10% of our resources back to God, to support the building up of God’s kingdom. Although this level of giving may not be immediately possible, we are aware of what percentage we are giving back and regularly strive to increase the amount, taking small incremental steps toward giving a full tithe.

As faithful stewards of the abundant blessings given to each of us by God, we are called to share those wonderful gifts of time, talents and treasures, with others.  The Stewardship Committee of St. George’s is responsible to help provide parishioners with opportunities to experience the joys of giving and to use their special gifts to support our parish programs.

What Can I Give?

Giving is a joyful celebration of God’s generosity to us and a sign of our ongoing dependence on God. In addition to money, we can use the things we own as tools of generosity. We can open the doors of our homes for hospitality. We can share our tools, our cooking ingredients, our vehicles, our knowledge, our skills, our recreation toys, and our time.

Community Sharing UpdateBy Chris Lisuzzo

March 2009
Our parish has been doing a grand job of bringing in items for Community Sharing.  I am so pleased to report hauling over 3 grocery cartfuls in January and February!  The parking lot is always jammed and there are lines of those seeking help everywhere in the new and improved facility at Apollo School on Milford Road.  Please continue to bring in the non-perishable items so St. George's can continue to be a source they can count on to help restock their shelves for those in need.  Even with 1 item from each of us every Sunday, think of the difference we could make.  Thanks to all the generous folks who have been donating.  Keep me busy!

What President Lincoln Didn’t Do
Submitted by Tom Herbst
 February, 2009

You probably already know many fascinating facts about Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president. You may know he enjoyed bowling, he was one of our tallest presidents at 6'4" and wore a size 14 shoe. Some even know he was once challenged to a duel (which he accepted) and is the only president to hold a patent (to lift boats over shoals). But there is one fact few people know about this popular president.

Abraham Lincoln died without a will. Even though he was an active attorney and undoubtedly knew the importance of writing his wishes, he never did. He died without a will even though he was constantly plagued with visions of his own demise. When he died, the lawyers were left to try to determine the division of his estate.

Unfortunately, many people from pastors to pilots to presidents die without the benefit of a will. (Lincoln is only one of several presidents to die without a will.) But it doesn't have to be that way. A will is simple to write with the help of an attorney and is usually far less expensive and far easier to do than people imagine.

If you don't have a will or have not updated it recently, call your attorney. If you want extra motivation or satisfaction, be sure to include a gift to your favorite cause in your plans. A gift to St. George’s is a great way to tell the world you want to leave a legacy that reaches beyond the years. And with a gift to St. George’s, you can live every day knowing you have learned from the past - that a life lived greatly becomes even greater when it leaves a gift that benefits others.
